Current Employee, more than 1 year
Pros
Here'due south my story: long time client of the stores who has since ended upwardly working at one of the retail locations for merely under a year. I went in loving the stores and the products. Unlike almost employees who were not at all familiar with the stores (since our shop happens to be in an area non every bit saturated equally others with WM stores).
Cons
Talking with co-workers who accept been with the company longer than I have, their main complaint is that there has been a definite alter since the company was bought by Kingswood Capital letter Management. I had loved shopping at WM for 10+ years in another region, and knew that after Bed Bathroom and Across sold them that they were bought past a private equity firm. You don't demand to be a financial expert to know that when a individual equity firm takes over a retailer, it unremarkably doesn't cease well. Their main goal is to pinch every little penny, clasp as much as they can out of the employees, then sell for a profit -or- write off their losses if the retailer doesn't do well. They do not intendance about the long-term growth of a company, nor the time to come of the employees. The company still has the skin of beingness "World Market place," but there's a individual disinterestedness soul inside. As a long time fan of the visitor on the customer end, it's somewhat depressing to see the effect that this has had. BBB might not take been the all-time ownership for the company, but I really hope that someone who actually believes in the company, the employees, and the product takes over. Full-time employment is rare. In a shop with a few dozen employees and only 3 or 4 get more than 30 hours a week. I know this is the case for pretty much every shop. That means big savings in company benefits that don't have to exist paid out. For some, part-fourth dimension might be all that they desire, just imagine being scheduled 5 days a week and y'all go cipher for health insurance, retirement, etc. So you have to notice another office-time job to fill up in the gaps, only then that other PT task will probably not offering you benefits, equally well. We finally bumped up our hourly charge per unit to exist comparable to the many other retailers in our area. Despite things returning to mostly pre-Covid sales figures and activity, our location is working with well-nigh one-half the staff that they had just concluding twelvemonth. How were we expecting to attract new employees when other big concatenation retailers nearby had "Now Hiring" signs that had wages starting off $3+ more than per 60 minutes? I already loved the store, so the discounts was a plus for me, merely with what you get paid, it'south honestly hard to really use the discount. Near employees work v hour shifts, and get a paid short break. It used to exist a fifteen min. break, but after Kingswood took over, that was reduced to a 10 min. break. The v min. difference really makes a deviation. If y'all demand to become to the restroom during your pause or go out to you lot car for something, it'south most impossible to get that washed and return in time--especially if you lot're in a store on a busy day and go flagged downward by a customer whom you lot desire to help. "Lamentable, I'm on a intermission" doesn't await positive. Departments and management take been shaved down. There used to exist section leaders in sections, such as the nutrient "Gourmet" department. Now, there's no really oversight in that--it'southward just a gratis for all for employees to try to expect after the departments, merely and so employees get pulled onto other things considering the stores are forced to be understaffed. Information technology'south really depressing to see how much food is thrown out because things go by the expiration engagement and oasis't been marked down, but employees are pulled off in other directions since they're spread as well thin. The stores make millions of dollars a year--comparable to other retailers in the area, even so our starting wage is much lower. If the shop staff are the reason we get echo customers spending money, why not recognize that? Restroom cleaning: certain, other employers may crave this of their staff. Virtually other retailers I've worked for had dedicated cleaning staff to exercise this, but WM doesn't. Nosotros're working with much smaller teams than we have in the past, merely then get flooded with inventory to put out. Overtime, withal, is barely ever offered because private equity companies don't want to pay information technology. It's sad to run across how it tin can take a calendar week to fully offload a truck delivery--something that could exist washed in a day or two with a proper corporeality of staff or properly allotted hours to do and then. Instead, nosotros're working with short 5 hours shifts while besides existence pulled in multiple directions to wear various hats. And asking customers to join the free store rewards program: dandy in theory, but horrible in execution. I've been working in retail since the 1990s and the registers we use are the verbal same model that I used to use way back then! Cell reception and WiFi in the stores is patchy at best. It can take x+ minutes sometimes to try to sign upward a new fellow member. More than 1/2 the fourth dimension, I take customers say "never mind" after starting the process. Store management does what they tin. Overall, the local team that I have is smashing. Management is just fielding management from up acme. I merely hope that the visitor gets a new owner who believes in it much amend than the electric current owners practise. It'southward heartbreaking to come across what used to exist a unique brand go a individual disinterestedness tool.

Business Outlook
Pros
Other Sales Assembly are nice and easy to become forth with.
Cons
They provide inadequate grooming. Trained for about one-half a day and so they leave you on your own. Harassing customers into their "World Marketplace Rewards Programme" merely so their managers can get a bonus. Technology is outdated, registers need a much needed update. Direction is rude and cavalier to hourly staff. No room for growth opportunity. Managers play favorites and do not deal with problematic coworkers.

Pros
I had really dandy coworkers at my shop location. They made going to work fun.
Cons
I had 2 main issues while working at my location. i. The GM was never in the store when it was open, which slowed store operation down. two. The online systems Earth Marketplace uses are outdated and hard to piece of work with. They really demand to exist updated.

Pros
Interesting merchandise and great relationships among staff. Helping customers tin can be very rewarding.
Cons
Abusive and incompetent management at the store and district director level. I accept seen management shout at employees on the floor, in front of customers. I accept taken client complaints nearly the General Director and was afraid to pass it on to anyone because I didn't trust the corporate function to keep confidential. Schedule often doesn't come out until 48 hours earlier shift. Employees were written upwards for not showing, just didn't know they were on the schedule. Trickled downward from the district mananger level. They're owned by Bed, Bath and Beyond and it'southward been a bad thing for World Marketplace.

Pros
Amazing staff and in-store management, keen deals, mostly happy shoppers, constant new inventory to "ooh" and "ahh" over.
Cons
While in-store management has been wonderful, up the concatenation has turned into a sad display of scrambling for the bottom dollar vs human being decency. I will be leaving a position I have loved due a company that I now do not trust and can not agree to be a part of. The decisions that the CEO has made has destroyed the company, but it is the individuals that I worked with on a daily footing that are being hurt over their poor business decisions. Corrupt, unethical and I am very, very sad. In management, you lot want to protect those that are your defended workers. World Market CEO has non immune for that. It doesn't affair if you lot have been a defended, responsible, hard-working private.

Electric current Employee, less than 1 year
Pros
Good pay and decent employee discount. I love nigh of the people I work with and most of the customers are pretty laid back and I love the merchandise we sell. Across the usual small retail annoyances that pop up with whatsoever task, I wouldn't have any issues with this company if it wasn't for...
Cons
the Globe Market Explorer plan. The fact that the company makes this its number one priority, peculiarly the percentage requirement instead of looking at whole numbers, makes no sense to me. I'm fast and so I go twice as many people through my line than nigh other cashiers and also sign up quite a lot of new customers. However, more than customers through a line also means getting told "no" more every bit well. I may be signing up 20 people in a solar day but the employee who hops on a register to help with lines may sign up three out of their 5 total customers that 24-hour interval. And then they are praised for their percentages while I'grand scolded. And in making this system a requirement, the direction wants you to essentially flim-flam the customers into signing up. I respect the customer showtime and foremost. If I've told them the benefits of the program and they're still not interested, then that "no" should be listened to. We shouldn't have to resort to tricking them into putting their numbers into our system and merely explaining what they've signed up for after they've signed upwardly. That'south sketchy to me and bad customer service.

Pros
Very flexible with my schedule, fun and friendly. I was hired to opened this location, I was a seasonal employee. I worked hard and stayed on after we opened. The store took off like a blindside. Information technology was overwhelming due to the decorated traffic and the lazy, dramatic employees. It took about 6 to 8 months, but in one case the GM built a core staff it felt like a second domicile. It was non like other retail jobs. World Market is the all-time retail task I have had. I beloved the products. The managers here are and then hard working, they explain the whys to your questions. GM has no trouble getting muddy, building furniture, fixturing or cleaning the bathrooms. The GM and the managers aways say thank you and never ask for you to exercise something they would not exercise.
Cons
Holiday time is tough, hoilday extended hours are very hard. Customers are tough during this time. Retail is just tough, only this World Market does what they can to provide a work life remainder. Practise not work here if y'all are not agile. Busy and fast. Must exist able to build fixturing and load article of furniture. Lazy people dont make information technology here, must be a people person 24/7. This could exist hard for some.

Former Employee, less than 1 yr
Pros
Colleagues were interesting and came from very diverse backgrounds. Likewise, the customers were mostly international and/or conscious of global affairs, so they were interesting to speak with and assist—if y'all speak more than ane or 2 languages, y'all could have fun with that, too, and invite international customers to come over again before long (and they have!). ALSO, the employee discounts were amazing! I really took advantage of that for my candle collection ;-)
Cons
Membership sign-ups were the primary negative attribute with working at Earth Market! I would always have to skid it into a chat when dealing with customers on the floor, or especially at the register. Sales Associates must accept a certain percentage of sign-ups per solar day (in a 6-hour shift, I ofttimes get around 4-five new sign-ups). It gets easier with time, but if a client isn't a fellow member and doesn't wish to get one (or if the line is too long or if everyone is in a hurry), actual members won't bother even entering their phone number (which functions as their membership ID), and then we (the sales associates) lose points. In a manner, nearly of our sign ups accept to do with: (one) sheer luck, (two) time of day, (3) connecting well with certain customers, and (iv) how well nosotros can pitch the member benefits and sideslip it into the conversation—you lot need to be smoothen and confident!
